Tired Post: Leiden and Gouda

Our cabin in Leiden

Hello there race fans.  I'm knackered.  Tough day.

We are currently holed up in the most salubrious accommodation so far - there were no trekking cabins available where we are tonight (7km out of Gouda), so we got upgraded to a "chalet" - where we actually have our own bathroom and a sink, and for the first time ever...A TV!!  We are currently sitting on a SOFA (OMG the luxury), and watching Dante's Peak, after some home made spag bol and salad for dinner.

We are all tired.  Today was a tough 33km  - we left our cabin in Leiden (cutest cabin and campsite) this morning in 2C coldness, though the sun was shining for the first time, around 9am headed for Gouda, and then a bit beyond to this campsite.  We set off after an easy day yesterday of only around 12km and a really good night's sleep, so thought we'd be in power mode...but alas, the cold, the headwind that was with us the whole way, had us pretty knackered by the time we arrived in Gouda.

We had hoped to stop on the way for some morning tea - but couldn't find anything.  Then as we rolled into one town with orange bunting everywhere, a marching band, loads of young kids all dressed up in orange with crowns on, and loads of people, we realised it was Kings Day today!  A public holiday.  So, we got all the way to Gouda with one stop - our last lollies and a drink from our drink bottle.

We rolled in to Gouda, through amazing scenery, like every day we can't believe how beautiful it is here, how amazing the houses are, the canals, the dykes...it's like cycling through a fairytale.  There were people everywhere for the holiday, and a big stage was set up with a band playing right in the centre of town.  We found food, sun, a beautiful church with stained glass windows dating from the 1500s.  Gorgeous.

We wandered around, ate more food, hit the supermarket to make our own dinner, then headed off to face the headwind again and get to our accommodation.  We are in the middle of gorgeous fields surrounded by sheep, ducks, canals, and other little cabins.  So nice and warm and snuggly.  We're having hot showers and we'll decide on our plan tomorrow over bacon and eggs in the morning.

I have to mention that our stay yesterday in Leiden was really fun, and so so so beautiful.  We rolled in from our campsite early for breakfast on the water, and decided that after the big day before of 50km we wanted to chill out a bit.  So we found our little cute campsite and booked ourselves in, then wandered around this gorgeous town for a few hours eating and seeing all we could.  Leiden is known as Little Amsterdam because it's just like Amsterdam with its canals and gorgeous old buildings - and it really was special.

Sometimes the Plan Doesn't Come Together

That's what I had for lunch in the local town.  And Mike's now famous "old cheese roll" is hidden there at the back.  We have had hours of fun and laughter about Mike's lunch.  It was shit. And so was mine.  Cody's was ok.  And there was no food for Roses.  But never fear - a visit to the supermarket (that included lollies, chocolate, chips, Fanta, and pancake mix - both gf and normal) made everything better! Let me go back a step.   We woke up to pouring rain this morning, and then our we-plan-as-we-go fell a bit to pieces today.  We tried to find a trekking hut or cabin for the tonight about 25km south, but it's the long weekend here, and nothing was available.  Luckily, the nice people here in our palace let us stay here again tonight - so we had a day of washing clothes, shopping, watching movies, laughing, eating - and I made another spag bol for dinner.  YUM YUM.   We have a new plan for tomorrow and a trekkin...

WE FREAKING DID IT - 686km in 22 Days!!!

Well, sportsfans, we did it.  We actually did it.  From Amsterdam to Villers Allerand - 686km in 22 days.  So much laughter, so many crazy moments, so many great places to stay, so many terrible places to stay!  Such amazing food.  So many funny moments.  So many swearing moments.  Rain, hail, snow, sun, freezing temperatures, very cold cabins, cobblestones, mud, water, grass, lots of fields, AMAZING SCENERY, INCREDIBLE CHEESES, and a shitload of FUN!!!! It's hard not to get philosophical, but that could get really boring, so instead, here are some pics and moments from our last day on the bike - 48 crazy km, including the longest 2km of our whole trip - the last 2km, on the "country" track between the champagne vines coming into Villers - it took us over an hour to get through it!  INSANE ending to and INSANE TRIP!  Our final breakfast - feeling happy and sad at the same time Bikes packed and ready to go for the final hurrah! Final mo...

On the Road Again

We're back.  We've had two days of great cycling since we last posted - and it's been beautiful. After our rainy rest day outside of Gouda we headed off with bright and sunny weather, and the gods were shining on us as we rolled onto our first ferry - it was waiting for us, and on we rolled - it was only a 5 minute journey, but we LOVED IT.  We cycled through beautiful scenery - and even managed to take off our rain jackets for the first time since we arrived.  Aaaah the sun.  One of the best moments so far for me was cycling past a pair of swans, with their nest behind them, and in their nest I could see a lot of eggs - SO FANTASTIC. After a couple of stops on the way, for Dutch Apple Cake, then Dominos in Dordrecht, We rolled into our um...rustic accommodation - the only thing we could find due to this long weekend thing...and we coped! Roses eating her GF waffle  Our VERY rustic trekking hut for the night Our very rustic ablutions block The next mornin...
